Ariadne's Thread...dynamic order at work

The Sitterwerk Kunstbibliothek is an ever-changing, migrating space. Prior to the RFID scanning technology, there had been systematic structure to the shelves. Now with the library's freedom to be rearranged in as thoughtful or chaotic a manner as the users apply, the shelves have a much more puzzling story to tell. The process of dynamic order poses more questions than it answers, getting lost in the stacks while finding more and more paths into different books than I originally sought. I have found using the library a wonderfully curious experience; I yearn to know what shelves a book has traveled across, how intentional were its neighbors? I sense there are stories to be told in the history of the shelf movements that could further this amazing social experiment of a library. Comparing the catalog database to a digital Ariadne's Thread for this organic labyrinth of a library, users can be lead directly to the shelf where the book currently sits to tackle their intellectual quest. This collection of the library's resources aided my research of the myth of Ariadne's Thread through King Mino's Labyrinth and its representation in art - as I worked on displaying the path of a single book's history across the library shelves during my residency project.

Titel: Die Bibliothek bei Nacht
Anmerkung: Beyond the perfection of the title for this library's nightly robotic scanning - this text examines the farther edges of libraries that exist in memory, secret, or even fantasy. Exploring what books would do if left to their own devices and the roles libraries have played in history to connect them to readers in the most dire situations. “Libraries, whether my own or shared with a greater reading public, have always seemed to me pleasantly mad places, and for as long as I can remember I've been seduced by their labyrinthine logic, which suggests that reason (if not art) rules over a cacophonous arrangement of books.” Listen to a podcast with the author at the New York Public Library: http://www.nypl.org/audiovideo/library-night-alberto-manguel-conversation-paul-holdengraeber --- This book was also the subject of my exploration of the history of the bookshelves - physically retracing the movements since 2010 recorded in the server database with red thread .
